Notochord

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008087

A flexible, rod-like structure composed of mesodermal cells that forms along the dorsal side of the embryo in chordates. It provides structural support and acts as a signaling center during embryonic development, inducing the formation of the neural tube and other axial structures. In vertebrates, the notochord is largely replaced by the vertebral column.
