Cranial nerve

Any of twelve pairs of nerves that emerge directly from the brain or brainstem, rather than from the spinal cord. These nerves primarily innervate structures in the head and neck, controlling sensory, motor, and autonomic functions. Examples include the optic nerve and the vagus nerve.
