Nerve root

The initial segment of a spinal nerve as it emerges from the spinal cord, consisting of a dorsal (sensory) root and a ventral (motor) root. These roots merge to form a mixed spinal nerve. Compression or damage to a nerve root can cause pain, weakness, or numbness in the corresponding dermatome or myotome.
