Cranial placodes
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002657
Localized thickenings of the embryonic ectoderm in the head and neck region of a developing vertebrate. These structures give rise to sensory neurons and other components of the peripheral nervous system, as well as to sensory organs. For example, the otic placode develops into the inner ear, the olfactory placode forms the sensory epithelium of the nose, and the lens placode develops into the lens of the eye.
