Aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000822

A cytochrome P450 enzyme, specifically CYP1A1, that catalyzes the hydroxylation of aryl hydrocarbons, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This enzyme is involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics, converting them into more water-soluble forms for excretion, but it can also activate procarcinogens. Its activity is often induced by exposure to environmental pollutants.
