First line of defence

The initial, non-specific barriers and responses of the immune system that prevent the entry and establishment of pathogens. These mechanisms include physical barriers like skin and mucous membranes, as well as chemical barriers such as stomach acid and antimicrobial peptides. Phagocytic cells like macrophages and neutrophils also contribute to this immediate protective response.
