Tonsil

A mass of lymphoid tissue located in the pharynx, forming part of the immune system's first line of defense against inhaled or ingested pathogens. These structures are strategically positioned to sample antigens entering the body through the mouth and nose. The palatine tonsils are the most prominent and are visible at the back of the throat.
