Palate
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008425
The roof of the mouth in vertebrates, forming a partition between the oral and nasal cavities. It consists of two parts: the anterior hard palate, which is a bony structure, and the posterior soft palate, which is a muscular extension. Incomplete fusion of the palatal shelves during embryonic development results in a congenital malformation known as a cleft palate.
