Anticoagulant

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012873

A substance that prevents or slows the coagulation of blood. These agents interfere with the blood clotting cascade by inhibiting the synthesis or function of clotting factors. Medically, they are used to treat and prevent thromboembolic disorders, while in a laboratory setting, compounds like heparin or citrate are added to blood samples to keep them in a liquid state for analysis.
