Apparent monomer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000744

The constitutional unit of a polymer that is named as if it were the monomer for the purposes of source-based nomenclature. This unit may not correspond to an actual polymerizable monomer but is used for convenience in naming the resulting polymer structure. For example, vinyl alcohol is the apparent monomer of poly(vinyl alcohol), a polymer that is synthesized by the hydrolysis of poly(vinyl acetate) because vinyl alcohol itself is unstable.
