Ion pair return
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006091
A process in which an ion pair, formed as an intermediate in a chemical reaction, reverts to the starting covalent reactant. This can occur before the ions fully dissociate or react with other species. It is often observed in solvolysis reactions and can lead to racemization or isotopic scrambling.
