Reciprocal translocation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013486
A chromosomal abnormality resulting from the mutual exchange of segments between two different, non-homologous chromosomes. When the exchange involves no net loss or gain of genetic material, the translocation is considered balanced, and the carrier is typically phenotypically normal. Individuals with a balanced translocation have an increased risk of producing gametes with an unbalanced chromosome complement, which can lead to infertility, spontaneous abortion, or offspring with congenital anomalies.
