Ionic liquid

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006111

A salt that exists in the liquid state at a temperature below a specified reference point, conventionally 100 °C (373 K). Composed entirely of ions, these substances feature a bulky, asymmetric organic cation paired with an organic or inorganic anion, a structure that hinders efficient crystal packing. This results in a low melting point compared to traditional inorganic salts, such as sodium chloride which melts at 801 °C.
