Binary elastic scattering
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001223
An interaction where an incident particle collides with a target atom, resulting in a change in the particle's direction and energy, while the total kinetic energy of the system is conserved. This process involves a direct interaction between two particles, with no internal excitation of either particle. It is a fundamental mechanism in techniques such as Rutherford backscattering spectrometry.
