Rutherford cross section
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010460
A theoretical value describing the probability of elastic scattering of charged particles by a Coulomb potential. It is derived from classical mechanics and assumes a point-like projectile and target nucleus. This cross section is inversely proportional to the square of the kinetic energy of the incident particle.
