Enhanced elastic cross section
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003936
An elastic scattering cross section of an atom that exceeds the Rutherford value because the incident particle partly penetrates the target nucleus, so nuclear forces act in addition to the Coulomb repulsion. It is typical of light target nuclei probed with energetic ions in ion beam analysis, where tabulated measured cross sections replace the Rutherford formula. Near a narrow nuclear resonance it can rise far above the Rutherford value, as for 4He on 16O near 3.04 MeV.
