Stopping cross section factor

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011448

A quantity used in ion scattering and Rutherford backscattering analysis that links the energy lost by a backscattered particle, for scattering at a particular depth and detection at a particular angle, to the product of atomic density and depth. It combines the stopping cross sections on the inward and outward paths, weighted by the kinematic factor and the scattering geometry. It is expressed in energy times area per atom, such as eV cm2 per atom, and converts a measured energy width into areal density.
