Hund rules

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005432

A set of principles used to determine the ground state electron configuration of an atom or molecule when multiple electron arrangements are possible for a given set of degenerate orbitals. The first rule states that for a given electron configuration, the term with the maximum multiplicity has the lowest energy. The second rule specifies that for a given multiplicity, the term with the largest orbital angular momentum quantum number has the lowest energy.
