Open-shell systems
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008253
Molecular or atomic systems that possess one or more unpaired electrons in their highest occupied molecular orbitals or atomic orbitals. This electronic configuration results in a net spin angular momentum for the system. Radicals and many transition metal complexes are common examples of open-shell systems, often exhibiting paramagnetism.
