Quartet state
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009767
An electronic state with total spin quantum number S = 3/2, giving a spin multiplicity of 2S + 1 = 4. It arises from three unpaired electrons with parallel spins, plus any number of paired electrons. Quartet states occur in odd-electron species such as the ground state of the nitrogen atom and of chromium(III) complexes with a d3 configuration.
