Odd-electron ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008193
An ion containing an unpaired electron in its ground electronic state or in one of its excited states. This results in the ion having a net electronic spin and being paramagnetic. An odd-electron ion is also known as a radical ion, and its formation is a common outcome of electron ionization in mass spectrometry, where a neutral molecule loses a single electron.
