Characteristic group

A functional group or substituent that defines the class of an organic compound and is used in systematic nomenclature to determine the principal functional group. It dictates the suffix or prefix used in the compound's name. Examples include hydroxyl groups (-OH) for alcohols and carboxyl groups (-COOH) for carboxylic acids.
