Main ring

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013253

The macrocycle chosen as the reference ring for naming a bridged polycyclic macromolecule, or a polycyclic macromolecular portion, because its subunits rank highest in seniority. The other rings are then described relative to it. Where a macrocycle carries macrocyclic substituents, the highest-seniority ring is called the parent macrocycle.
