Main-chain macromolecular rotaxane

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006921

A type of macromolecular rotaxane in which the linear component, or thread, is a polymer chain, and the cyclic components are threaded onto this main polymer backbone. The cyclic molecules are mechanically interlocked with the polymer chain and are prevented from dethreading by bulky stopper groups located at the ends of the polymer. This architecture contrasts with side-chain macromolecular rotaxanes, where the rotaxane units are attached as pendants to the main polymer chain.
