Ring-sector

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013511

An unbranched chain of ring atoms that runs between two bridgeheads or ring junctions, used in naming bridged and fused polycyclic systems, without containing any other bridgehead or junction. A bond joining two bridgeheads directly is called a bond ring-sector and carries no atoms. Norbornane has three ring-sectors, of two, two and one atoms, linking its two bridgehead carbons.
