Benzylic groups
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001194
Arylmethyl groups ArCR2-, in which a saturated carbon atom is bonded directly to an aromatic ring, benzyl C6H5CH2- being the prototype. That saturated carbon is called the benzylic position, and its C-H bonds are weak, near 90 kilocalories per mole in toluene, because the radical, cation, or anion formed there is stabilized by conjugation with the ring.
