Alkanium ions

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012852

Carbocations derived from alkanes by the addition of a proton, resulting in a pentacoordinate carbon atom. These ions are highly reactive intermediates, typically observed in superacidic media or in the gas phase. The simplest example is the methanium ion, CH5+, which features a carbon atom bonded to five hydrogen atoms.
