Hyperchromic effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005509
An increase in the absorption of ultraviolet light by a substance, such as DNA, due to changes in its molecular structure. This effect is observed when double-stranded DNA denatures into single strands, as the unstacked bases absorb more light. The hyperchromic effect is a key indicator of DNA denaturation and melting temperature.
