Hypochromic effect

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013176

A decrease in the molar absorption coefficient of a substance, resulting in a lower intensity of light absorption at a specific wavelength. This phenomenon is observed in nucleic acids when individual polynucleotide strands associate to form a double helix, as the stacking of base pairs restricts the resonance of the aromatic rings. The opposite phenomenon, an increase in absorbance upon denaturation of the double helix, is known as the hyperchromic effect.
