Auxochrome
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001015
A functional group that does not absorb light in the visible region itself but, when attached to a chromophore, modifies the ability of the chromophore to absorb light. These groups often contain lone pairs of electrons that can interact with the pi system of the chromophore. Common examples include hydroxyl (-OH) and amino (-NH2) groups.
