Carbon dioxide corrosion
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000544
The degradation of metallic components in oil and gas production systems caused by the presence of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) in water. This acidic environment leads to the formation of carbonic acid, which reacts with steel to form iron carbonate and hydrogen. It is a common issue in wells producing wet gas or water with high CO2 content, often mitigated by corrosion inhibitors or resistant alloys.
