Sweetening

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003729

The process of removing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from natural gas or crude oil to meet pipeline specifications and reduce corrosion. This is typically achieved using amine treating units that chemically absorb the acidic components. The treated gas or oil is then considered "sweet," while untreated fluids are "sour".
