Sour

Describing natural gas or crude oil containing a noticeable amount of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other sulfur compounds like mercaptans. These compounds are corrosive to equipment, toxic to personnel, and produce sulfur dioxide upon combustion. A common industry threshold classifies gas as sour if it contains more than 4 parts per million by volume of H2S.
