Acid gas
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000030
A mixture of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) removed from a sour natural gas or refinery gas stream during sweetening processes. This gas is highly corrosive in the presence of water and extremely toxic due to its H₂S content. Acid gas is either sent to a sulfur recovery unit, where H₂S is converted to elemental sulfur, or disposed of through injection into a dedicated underground formation.
