Sound
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003512
A form of energy that propagates as a mechanical wave of pressure and displacement through a medium such as rock or water. In seismic exploration, artificially generated sound waves are transmitted into the Earth, and their reflections from subsurface interfaces are recorded to create an image of the geology. The speed of sound in rock, its acoustic velocity, is a primary physical property measured, ranging from 1,500 to over 6,000 meters per second.
