Spinning chain
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003544
A length of chain formerly used to make up or break out drill pipe connections by wrapping it around the pipe and pulling it with a cathead. This manual method was labor-intensive and posed safety risks to rig crews. Modern drilling rigs have largely replaced spinning chains with automated iron roughnecks for increased safety and efficiency.
