Spinning-drop tensiometer
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003545
A laboratory instrument used to measure ultra-low interfacial tension between two immiscible liquids, such as oil and water, under reservoir conditions. A drop of one liquid is placed in a rotating capillary tube filled with the other liquid, and the drop elongates into an ellipsoid due to centrifugal force. The interfacial tension is calculated from the drop's dimensions, rotational speed, and the density difference between the liquids, with values often in the range of 10^-3 mN/m.
