Aggregate

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000078

A group or cluster of particles in a fluid, most often clay platelets stacked face to face in a water-based mud. Aggregates form when calcium or magnesium ions flood a freshwater mud, or when a mud is converted to a lime or gypsum system, because these ions collapse the water layer around the platelets. The loss of separately dispersed particles lowers plastic viscosity and yield point and raises fluid loss.
