Floc
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001460
A loose cluster of clay platelets or other fine particles in a drilling fluid, bound by attraction between positively charged edges and negatively charged faces, or between edges. Flocs form when salts, cement or anhydrite contaminate the mud, and they raise viscosity, yield point and gel strength until a thinner disperses them. Face-to-face stacking of platelets, by contrast, is aggregation and lowers viscosity.
