Mixed-metal hydroxide
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002395
A class of synthetic layered double hydroxides, typically magnesium and aluminium hydroxide formed by co-precipitation, whose particles carry a positive charge. Added to bentonite-based water muds, they link the negatively charged clay platelets into a fragile gel, giving strong shear thinning, high low-shear viscosity and good suspension of cuttings. MMH is a viscosifier only, so a separate polymer such as starch or PAC is still needed for filtration control.
