Aggregation
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004221
The clustering of clay platelets into compact face-to-face stacks in a water-based mud, driven by divalent ions such as calcium that collapse the water layers around the platelets. Fewer separate particles remain active, so plastic viscosity, yield point, and gel strength fall and filtration rises. It differs from flocculation, in which edge-to-face linking of platelets builds a gel structure and raises viscosity.
