Tannin
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003766
A class of astringent, bitter plant polyphenols that act as deflocculants and fluid loss control agents in water-based drilling fluids. These compounds modify the surface charge of clay particles, preventing their aggregation and maintaining the desired viscosity and gel strength of the drilling mud. Tannins are often used in conjunction with other additives to achieve optimal mud properties.
