Aggregate
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000334
A cluster of particles, such as molecules, colloids, or catalyst particles, held together by physical or chemical forces. In catalysis, an aggregate consists of several primary particles that are strongly bonded and whose total exterior surface area is less than the sum of the surface areas of the individual constituent particles. The strength of the bonds within an aggregate is such that it is not easily broken down into its primary particles by simple agitation.
