Soap

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003486

A salt of a fatty acid used as a surfactant in certain drilling fluids, particularly in oil-based and synthetic-based muds. Soaps act as emulsifiers, creating and maintaining a stable dispersion of water droplets within the non-aqueous base fluid. The type of soap, such as those derived from tall oil or other fatty acids, is selected based on the desired emulsion stability and rheological properties for specific downhole temperature and pressure conditions.
