Stearate

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003613

A salt or ester of stearic acid, a long-chain saturated fatty acid, used as an additive in drilling fluids and lubricants. In drilling muds, metallic stearates like calcium or aluminum stearate function as lubricants to reduce torque and drag, and also act as defoamers or emulsifiers in some formulations. Stearates are components of lubricating greases used for rig equipment, providing water resistance and thickening properties.
