SOAP
Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-001130
A protocol for exchanging structured information to implement web services in computer networks. It relies on XML for its message format and consists of three parts: an envelope that defines the message structure, a set of encoding rules for expressing application-defined data types, and a convention for representing remote procedure calls. Unlike REST, which is an architectural style, SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) is a more rigid, standards-based protocol that is independent of any transport protocol, though it is most often used with HTTP.
