A software design paradigm, Service-Oriented Architecture, that structures an application as a collection of loosely coupled, interoperable services. These services communicate over a network, using standard protocols to perform discrete business functions, such as retrieving customer data or processing a payment. Communication protocols include SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) or REST, and services are described using the Web Services Description Language (WSDL).
