Soap

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010962

A salt of a fatty acid, typically an alkali metal salt, used as a cleaning agent. These compounds possess both hydrophilic (carboxylate head) and hydrophobic (hydrocarbon tail) properties, allowing them to emulsify oils and fats in water. Common soaps are sodium or potassium salts of long-chain carboxylic acids.
