Buffer
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004246
A chemical additive or system of additives that resists changes in the pH of a drilling fluid when an acid or a base is introduced. Buffers work by reacting with added hydrogen or hydroxide ions, thereby maintaining a relatively stable pH environment which is necessary for the performance of other mud additives and for corrosion control. Common buffering systems in water-based muds include the carbonate/bicarbonate system, often managed with additions of lime or caustic soda.
