Buffered solution
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004249
A fluid formulated to resist changes in its pH upon the addition of acidic or alkaline substances. In drilling fluids, maintaining a stable pH is necessary for the proper function of many additives, such as polymers and clay inhibitors, and for mitigating corrosion of downhole equipment. Common buffering systems in water-based muds include combinations of bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydroxide ions, which maintain the fluid's alkalinity within a specified range, often between 9.5 and 10.5.
